How to calculate hourly pay to salary

An hourly wage tells you what you earn for each hour of work. Your estimated annual gross income depends on how many hours you work each week and how many weeks you work during the year.

THE FORMULAHourly rate × Hours per week × Weeks per year = Annual pay

For example, if you earn $28 per hour, work 40 hours per week, and work 52 weeks per year:

$28 × 40 × 52 = $58,240 per year

That's a gross estimate: it does not deduct federal or state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, benefits, or retirement contributions. It also assumes your hourly pay stays the same all year.

What if I take unpaid time off?

Change the “weeks worked per year” field. For instance, 48 paid weeks instead of 52 at $28/hour and 40 hours/week results in $53,760 gross annual earnings. If you're paid for vacation, count those paid weeks as worked weeks for this basic estimate.

Monthly versus biweekly pay

For comparison, the calculator uses annual pay ÷ 12 for an average month and annual pay ÷ 26 for an average two-week period. Actual paychecks can differ when work hours vary or payroll deductions apply. The biweekly figure is an annualized average, not necessarily the wages earned in a specific two-week stretch.

Frequently asked questions

Is this my take-home pay?

No. The result is gross pay before taxes, insurance, retirement contributions, and other deductions.

Does the estimate include overtime?

No. It uses the standard hourly rate for every entered hour. Try the Overtime Pay Calculator if some hours are paid at a higher rate.

How many work weeks are in a year?

A full calendar year has roughly 52 weeks. For hourly workers with unpaid time off or seasonal schedules, enter the number of weeks you expect to be paid.
